Description

Chequers Tree, Sorbus torminalis, is a deciduous tree with a height, when mature, of about 15 metres so will suit a medium to large garden. I have never noticed a mature tree outside an arboretum, in my view anyone who has got the room should consider having one. It does like deep fertile soil of any type, from chalk to slightly acid soil, even damp areas are fine, but not waterlogged. The timber seems to be pretty special, in fact I have read that it is one of the most valuable hardwoods in Europe. It has fine grains and is very dense with its immense strength ideal for bending. It was used in the past to make wooden screws for wine presses. Today it is still used in furniture production for decorative veneering. The fruit is enjoyed by both birds and mammals and I am told also safe for humans to eat. The taste is similar to dates, although in most summers it is too cool to ripen fully. In the past the fruit was added to ale to flavour beer before the advent of hops. The name Chequers comes from the game of draughts played in pubs and inns.
