Description

Western Red Cedar, Thuja plicata, is an evergreen coniferous tree which can grow fifty to seventy metres tall. It has an aromatic trunk which is rot resistant. The trunk, when on full view when it’s branches have weathered away, is just spectacular. The colour is brown and fibrous, the base when mature becomes bulbous then goes skyward gradually narrowing as it reaches the canopy. I have noticed these on coastal areas where they have had to survive against storms. Away from the coastal areas in large parks the tree looks totally different, long branches can hang on, given room these can hang down from the top and almost reach the ground virtually hiding the trunk from view, this also looks equally as spectacular.
This tree prefers to grow where the soil is always damp, its roots are quite shallow for a tall tree. It does like any good soil and position away from buildings! Western Red Cedar also makes a very attractive hedge, slower growing than leylandii and it will cut back well if required, without looking brown and untidy. I understand that it is very effective at absorbing pollution, traffic noise and makes a perfect screen. It will make an effective hedge in any sized garden.
