Hawthorn – Crataegus monogyna (Potted)

This deciduous plant is used mainly for hedging. it will grow in most types of soil. It is safe for livestock as the thorns, unlike some plants, will not harm farm animals or horses. The plants, when allowed to grow freely, can be layered to help create a stock proof hedge. Ideally, when established, it is best to trim the hedge no more than once in three years two allow the marvelous May blossom to develop. I would suggest a policy of only trimming a third of the hedge each year, in this way the environment will benefit from part of the hedge flowering and producing berries every year. Hawthorn works really well with a small percentage of other hedging species to create a natural country hedge. It is equally satisfying to plant Hawthorn as an individual tree as, in time, they make a superb small tree for any size of garden.
